THE OBSCURE

The Obscure is a place in a different plane of existance. It is a lot like Earth, but everything is very large and is divided into two halves, "Society" and "The Wild." The wild is basically just that- wilderness. It is mostly forest, but there is also ocean, plains, etc. Unbelievers takes place in The Wild, as that's where the portals to it are located. It is inhabited by many dangerous creatures and kids that wondered into the Obscure.
Society, is also what it sounds like. It is where the Anish (ah-neesh) live. The Anish are basically giant people. (Mr. Grey and Guard are Anish.) They don't look like humans, but act and think like them. The society is also like our society. At the time Unbelievers takes place, the Society is like how ours was in the 30s-40s. Black and white television, jazz, no computers n stuff, etc.

THE OBSCURE CREATURE TYPES

There are four types of creatures in the Obscure. Ferals, Semis, Parasites, and the Anish.
Type 1: Ferals. Ferals are basically just creatures that have the same sentience and intelligence as a bear, bird, etc. They typically are 9-15 feet (274.32-457.2 centimeters) tall. They rarely get to 15 feet, however. Most of them are very agressive and will attack humans and other creatures. However, there are some docile ferals. Infected kids (and even sometimes the Anish) use them as pets and ways to travel.

Type 2: Semis. Semis are a lot like ferals, but are slightly more intelligent. Their appearnce also is slighty more human, which gives them a very uncanny look. They often can say very simples words and phrases like "Hello, Where are you, What?," etc. They usually are quadrupedal, and have either human-like hands, feet, faces, etc. They are usually pretty docile unless you disturb them.

Type 3: Parasites. Parasites are the rarest type. They are mostly composed of a black, gaslike substance with floating teeth and/or eyes. They got their name from how they survive. They "infect" hosts with a part of their body. They do this because it keeps them alive longer just in case another part of them dies. Ever since humans came along, they primarily infect them because their bodies are way more tolerant of being infected than other creatures in the Obscure. It is very rare not to get infected by a parasite because they typically nest around the five portals to the Obscure.

Type 4: The Anish. I already briefly explained the Anish before on this page, but I'll reiterate. The Anish are basically the humans of the Obscure, besides the fact they are 20 feet (609.6 centimeters) and don't really look like humans. Well, some resemble humans more than others. It varies. They all are bipedal, and have the same intelligence and sentience of humans. They rarely go into the Wild part of the Obscure. When they do, they don't usually come back.

THE HOTEL

The hotel, aka Devorabunt, is a very famous hotel in the Obscure that is known for its food and luxury. It is located inbetween the Wild and Society, but is slightly more in the Wild. When Devorabunt is introduced in Unbelievers, it is very crowded and fully booked. Mr. Grey owns Devorabunt. He is another reason Devorabunt is so popular, because he was a famous actor. Business boomed once he started owning the hotel, and got even more famous. The food is incredibley good. Why is it so good? Well, Mr. Grey has found a very good ingredient he has been familer with before. Human children. No Anish knows what a human is besides Mr. Grey (and later Guard.)
Devorabunt is very old and was built 106 years before the events of Unbelievers takes place. It is important in Unbelievers, and even Coccindia later uses it do its advantage in act two.

THE INFECTED

The infected are humans infected by parasites. They are still the same as they used to be, besides their physical appearance. The human body does not react well to being infected by a parasite, and this results into severe physical changes. Some infected are luckier than others. For example, Ray only had his pupils fade and his mouth and nose disapear. However, others may have grow extra and/or lose multiple limbs and have their faces severly distorted. Most infected are children. This is mostly because parasites prefer hosts that live longer, and the fact that mostly children are lured into the Obscure.

THE CULT

The Cult (who calls themselves "The Patrons of Coccindia"/TPOC) is the main antagonists of Unbelievers. They worship Coccindia. It was founded in the 1930s, when a man found the ruins of a portal to the Obscure. It is the closest to the Pit, so Coccindia was able to communicate with the man. One thing led to another and Coccindia convinced the man that he is the "chosen" one, and helping free Coccindia will make the world a better place. This man is the founder of the Cult. Over many decades the cult had gained a huge following, and all members are graced with a small amount of Coccindia's magic. The Cult's main goal is to free Coccindia. They basically have a whole religion around it, and even have a book called "The Malzech" (named after the last name of the founder of the cult) all about said religion and customs to the religion. The Cult reallly doesn't like being called a cult or that they have a religion based around Coccindia. They just believe they are all chosen ones to free Coccindia.
The children in the cult MUST wear special masks at all times. They were originally to protect them from parasites, but later became tradition.

RITHTOV

Rithtov is the small town the cult resides in. It was built in 1952 to be a secluded and safe place for the cult to be. It also was very very close to one of the five portals to The Obscure. Barely anyone outside of the cult can find Rithtov, and if they do they are forced to the Obscure and left there to die. Though, sometimes some cult members leave Rithtov for a few months to recruit new members.
There are actually a few non-cult members in Rithtov. These members are Ray's family, Jasper's family, and two other random couples who serve no signifigance to the story whatsoever. They were brought into Rithtov a week before the events of Act 1 take place.

No one can enter or leave Rithtov. If anyone is seen trying to escape or contact the outside world they are punished severely by being tied to a tree in the Obscure.

LADYBUGS

In the world of Unbelievers, Coccindia created ladybugs. That's right. Coccindia created them wayyy back in the Jurassic period. They serve as vessels to hold Coccindia's magic. They are very important, they are what lead people (mostly kids) into the Obscure. They are able to send kind of telepathetic messages to people's heads? It's odd, these messages are hard to get through adults, thus kids mostly being in the Obscure.

Ladybugs are able to open portals to the Obscure, with Coccindia's magic. They are all linked to Coccindia, and if it dies, so do all ladybugs.
